On Monday, Al DeCesaris rode into the parking lot of Davidsonville Elementary School on his bicycle. This after having crossed the country by himself on his bike to raise money for Sturge–Weber syndrome, which afflicts his young niece Jenna Heck, a student at DES. DeCesaris was able to complete his coast-to-coast ride in about 45 days.
DeCesaris and his family will be celebrating the completion of the ride from 6 to 9 p.m. on Oct. 28 (Monday) at the Greene Turtle in Annapolis. There, 20 percent of the evening’s proceeds will benefit the cause. They’re inviting the public to come out, chat with Al about the ride, have dinner and celebrate the over $50,000 already raised by the effort.
DeCesaris started out at the Santa Monica Pier in California. Along the way, he met other Sturge-Weber patients, who have already benefited from the eight years of fundraising that the Heck-DeCesaris family has undertaken to better understand and find a cure for the disease, which causes a “Port-wine stain” on the skin, but can have more serious complications involving the brain.
